Deputy Sheriff Nate Helle

Shasta County Sheriff’s Office

Date of Birth: 5/4/1984
End Of Watch: 8/13/2020

Nate’s life dream was to be a Law Enforcement Officer. He first attempted to join the police academy in 2012, however, just prior to his start date, he lost his vision. He was diagnosed with sudden onset of Multiple Sclerosis. Nate was lucky enough to get his Multiple Sclerosis under control, and several years later in 2015, he was able to finally re-enter the Butte College Police Academy, Class 135.

Nate was an inspirational individual, and excelled in the academy. Nate received a Job Officer from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, and was excited to move back home to Burney, Ca to be the resident deputy. Two weeks prior to the end of the academy, his beloved Father-in-law passed away suddenly, and Nate had to again put his law enforcement dreams on hold. Nate wanted to support his family, and made the decision to run the family business, ”Alpine Drive Inn” in Burney, California.

Nate was able to eventually get the restaurant settled, and finally began his LE career. Nate started as a Shasta County Reserve Deputy, until getting hired on full time, as the Shasta County Sheriff’s Burney Resident Deputy.

Nate loved his career as a Deputy Sheriff. In 2018, Nate, and countless other local law enforcement and first responders were asked to assist with the Carr Fire, which was ravaging the Redding area. Nate, along with so many other first responders were tasked with evacuations, security patrols, and assisting with the firefighting efforts. Nate was exposed to many noxious chemicals and carcinogens during his efforts to keep Shasta County Citizens safe.

Several months after the Carr fire, Nate experienced chest discomfort, and was ultimately diagnosed with stage three esophageal cancer. Nate’s fighting spirit allowed him to battle cancer, and due to his strength, Nate went into remission after a painful surgery removing half of his stomach and the majority of his esophagus.

Unfortunately, Nate’s time being cancer free did not last long, and approximately three months later, Nate’s cancer returned. Though Nate continued to fight, cancer ultimately took his life on August 13, 2020.

Nate’s family sought Doctors to assist in his treatment, and learned that due to his pre-existing Multiple Sclerosis auto-immune disorder, he was at a higher risk to be affected by the carcinogenic exposure from the Carr Fire. Nate is survived by his Wife Dori, two young children Maverick and Mavery.
